Juniors in Mrs. Melanie Waite’s precalculus class combined math with art to create sculptures and 3D models that displayed precalculus concepts in a tangible and personal way. Students used the unit circle to map out their structures. The project provided an avenue for students to see how creativity meshes seamlessly with calculations in their own creations, as well as God’s creation.

Although trigonometry involving the unit circle may seem abstract in a textbook, hands-on projects help the concepts materialize with application and design. With special triangles, angles, and trigonometric values in the unit circle, students create coordinates that map out their structures. Using math, they learn that imagination is the limit.

“Hands-on learning gives students ownership.  They remember what they experience far more than what they hear, so giving them the opportunity to build something makes the math less abstract and more personal,” Waite said.

As students work, each individual’s strengths shine through their designs. “One of my favorite parts of this project is seeing how differently each student uses their unique talents. Some love getting creative with the design; others care more about getting every detail just right, but they’re all showing their creativity in their own way,” Waite said.

Math fluidly integrates human creativity, as if perfectly designed to intertwine with it. Students experiment with creating structures like flowers, cyclones, and household objects, reflecting as image bearers the creative nature of God.

“The unit circle itself highlights patterns, symmetry, and relationships which reflect the order and intentional design we see in creation,” said Waite.

Whether through plant life, natural phenomena, or aspects of daily life, God’s fingerprint of perfection remains in everything He created. In this project, students saw the big picture of precalculus and God’s design more clearly as they modeled creation’s wonders.
