On Wednesday, September 7, junior Channing Hensley was awarded Athlete of the Week by the Raleigh Sports Club. The Raleigh Sports Club, established in 1964 to recognize athletic and academic achievements, meets weekly to discuss athletics and hear from great athletes.
Hensley has played golf for three years and is co-captain of the girls varsity golf team. She started playing in eighth grade, yet was not as successful as she hoped. However, through determination and hard work, she has become a solid golfer with a handicap of 4.
Varsity girls golf coach Robby Carruth said, "She basically lives at the [golf course]. They should put a cot at the practice area because of all the time she spends at the putting green, chipping area, and the driving range."
Her practice routine is rigorous because her goals are high. Hensley's plan for the future consists of playing collegiate golf "at a school that challenges her academically and athletically." After college, Hensley plans to compete professionally.
